What's on offer?

Join Dr Claire Thompson and Lauren Denyer to hear about the SALIENT Food Trials research, on healthy and sustainable diets, and find out how members of the public have contributed to the research at every stage – planning, research and delivery, advice on recruitment and communication strategies. Hear from some of our public advisors on why they get involved and learn how you can get involved in supporting research at the University of Hertfordshire in the future.

What's it about?

The food system is damaging the environment through climate change and biodiversity loss. It is damaging our health too, with poor diet responsible for one in seven preventable deaths in the UK. SALIENT stands for Food System triALs for Impact on Environment, Nutrition and healTh. SALIENT is a research project that is finding out how we can change to the food system for the better. This is about more than just telling people what they should be eating. We are looking at how parts of the food environment such as supermarkets, workplace canteens, and delivery apps can be changed to provide healthier and more sustainable choices. At the Festival of Social Science, our stand invites you to get involved and learn about the research findings. Find out about the changes we have been making and whether they have worked. Take part in activities such as Eco Shop Heroes – identifying eco-friendly food options from a selection of choices and become a Veggie Detective and decipher which vegetarian ready meal is the heathiest and most sustainable.

This is your chance to reflect on your own everyday eating habits and discover what the research tells us about healthier, sustainable food. You’ll also find out how to sign up to our online session the following week, where we’ll go deeper into the research findings, and key messages. Whether you consider yourself a pro at choosing healthy and sustainable options, or curious about what shapes our daily food choices, this is a fun interactive way to find out how and why our diets need to change.
